Working as a doctor is one of the most noble of professions. But to simply work is to merely exist. To thrive benefits not just the doctor but their patients.
There are many ingredients that go into transforming a working doctor into a thriving one – a doctor who loves their career as well as the people they work for and with.
Here are some of the key points we think are most important in terms of how doctors can thrive.
State of the art clinics
The medical profession is an ever-evolving beast and those who don’t change with it can be quickly left behind.
That’s why we think having modern, bright facilities with the very latest equipment in our clinics makes a huge difference, not just for our doctors but our patients as well.
Ultimately, giving our doctors the best possible working environment helps us give our patients the best possible care. This is why at AHA we’ve invested so much into the development of both of our clinics.
A great team
Great people make a great team and having the best people is absolutely imperative to the success of any business.
We’ve learned how important it is to recruit people who align with our company goals and core values. Combine that with open and honest communication, feedback and a trusted management team and it’s a winning ticket.
Positive vibes tend to become infectious.
Work-life balance
We all love our jobs and are not afraid to work hard. But down time is just as important as well.
A good work-life balance is absolutely critical to everyone’s positive state of mind, helping to ensure peace and happiness and guard against burnout.
That’s why we value the importance of being able to work flexible hours around personal and family needs. We believe this is the way forward for work.
Invest in personal tech
Some people think of technology as ‘gimmicky’ or a waste of money. But just like your workplace environment, it’s a good idea to make sure you have some of the latest technology at your fingertips. This includes the latest phone to manage your life and relationships on the run as efficiently as possible, a great laptop for high performance business on the go and even a smart watch to keep on top of all of the details, including your own personal health.
Keep learning
One of the best and smartest things you can do as a doctor is to keep educating yourself.
Growing your knowledge and skill set is the best way to stay relevant and in demand as a doctor as well as doing wonders for your own confidence and self-worth.
It’s money well invested in yourself, ensuring you will thrive for years to come.
Look the part
How you dress and present yourself as a doctor says a lot about how you feel about yourself and gives your patients confidence in your abilities.
A 2018 study published in the BMJ Open revealed 53% of patients found it important what doctors were wearing when they were being treated.
More than a third also reported it influenced how satisfied they were with their level of care.
A sharp-dressed doctor is likely to score better in terms of their knowledge, trustworthiness, care, approachability and how comfortable their patients are with them.
Curiously, the favourite look for doctors among patients is formal attire paired with a white coat.
Health is wealth
While it is important to remember how you present yourself on the outside, it’s just as important not to neglect your inside.
That means both your mental and physical wellbeing.
Look after yourself. Take time off when it’s needed. Eat healthily. Stay in shape whether that means daily walks or a gym membership.
You can’t very well preach the benefits of keeping fit if you are failing in that area yourself.
Invest in a good mattress
You’ll spend a third of your life asleep and don’t want to do it on a mattress that’s going to give you neck and back problems.
You will already know how important quality sleep is to your overall health so don’t stint on your slumber!
Protect your income
Insurance is important in every job and few more so than the medical profession. While you have mandatory insurance to practice as a GP, you should also invest in appropriate income protection and life insurance.
You stand to lose a lot of money (and your loved ones will be significant impacted, too) if you can’t work so protecting that ability or asset is essential and should not be disregarded.
